Which 5 people should you have in your network?

Whether you're a student, a graduate or a young professional, there are 5 people you should always have in your network.

  1. A mentor:
someone who has 'been there, done that', this person is often a number of years ahead of you with insight, experience, wisdom and perhaps even specialist knowledge in your chosen field. They work with you over a number of months and even years, sharing their knowledge, their insight and their connections and help you to learn from their successes and their mistakes!

  2. A career coach: someone objective and independent, this person can help you to gain clarity over your goals and make the decisions necessary to reach those goals. Not one to give advice, the coach is there to help you think through your options, make informed decisions and turn your plans into reality.

  3. A connector: someone plugged into your area of interest or your field of focus, this person often has access to lots of useful people, resources and information and keeps you in the loop when they come across something you might find helpful.

  4. A visionary: someone keen to explore ideas and opportunities with you, this person can help you to turn your day dreams into ideas and your ideas into plans.

  5. A challenger: someone down to earth with a realistic outlook on life, this person challenges and quizzes your ideas and plans. They remind you of the potential limitations to your idea and help you to realise what's left to do!

If you're looking for a challenge yourself, there's one more person to add:

  • A protege: someone for whom you can serve as a mentor, a coach, a connector, a visionary or a challenger!
